Beam conditions (General):
- 20 GeV beam incident on a production target (Be).
- Parallel beam at detector location (~4cm diameter ).
- Momentum analysis, max dP/P for tuning, deltaP/P~1% for measurements,
matching the AMS conditions.
A) Be production target
1. Beam settings and particle identification:
The settings will be made with the particle production in the
fragmentation region, i.e., for particles with the beam velocity and a
mass over charge ratio A/Z = 2 , in order to provide the sequence of
fragments of interest for the tests2H, 4He, 6Li, 10B, 12C, 14N, 16O,
.., 20Ne,.., 28Si, .., 40Ca, .., 58Ni, and those beyond this region of
mass which will be rejected at the trigger level (optionally included
for some measurements).
The dE/dX counters (scintillators and Cherenkov) will be set in these
conditions. They should provide unambiguous ID for the beam particles
up to the region of mass of Si, at least. For higher charge elements,
the counter calibration should allow to obtain the charge value to a
reasonable accuracy (+-one charge unit).
The proto PMTs will be kept out the beam during the beam tuning.
This should allow to start the prototype study.
2. Prototype study
- Some first data - and most important - will be taken in the above
conditions, i.e., with the set of beam velocity fragments with A/Z=2. At
this particle momentum per nucleon, the prototype should be able to
achieve single unit of mass separation for the lightest isotopes.
Next, data will be taken with beam momentum set to:
- 20 GeV/A 3He (see next page)
- 20 GeV protons (half the previous rigidity).
- 5 to ~15 GeV protons, in steps of say, 2 GeV, for point B above.
- 6 to 8 GeV per nucleon A/Z=2 fragments for velocity measurements
within the range of mass ID (coalescence particles, very low beam
intensity if any) for point A above.
During these steps, various conditions will be varied, like Cherenkov
radiator and geometrical configuration of the prototype, PMT High
voltages, Incident particle angle). These will be given in a detailed
version of the run plan.
3. Other steps considered
- Change of production target (Pb).
- Exotic beam setting option (antiprotons)
